iPad Features – Plentiful Yet Lacking
iPad was probably designed and built with the intention to supersede the norm of what mobile computing is about. Other than basic iPad features regarding storage, processor, speed and memory, it serves to utilize its one screen to its maximum ability. Being its single mode of data entry and display, its designers seem to have a thing or two against physical keyboards, thus the obvious lack of buttons. If you’re all thumbs, perhaps the iPad is the device for you as digits are the recommended stylus for its multi-touch screen.
iPad’s web browser manages open pages via a browser dashboard instead of multiple tabs. It also comes with a built-in dictionary which provides a quick definition of a highlighted word. Similar to performing a website search, the user can search contents of e-books based on keywords. Content such as photos and music stored in the iPad are easily managed and retrieved to be combined into slideshows, albums and others.
On the physical side, iPad features boast energy-saving functionalities such as automatically adjusting screen brightness based on the vicinity’s direct and ambient lighting. Its actual battery life also outlasted its officially claimed life despite heavy usage. There is significant improvement in heat emission as previous devices of iPad’s manufacturer had a reputation of scorching laps. Screen orientation automatically follows the device’s position. This means the content displayed on screen switches between portrait and landscape mode depending on the tilt of the screen. However, the user can lock the orientation by a simple flip of a switch to ensure the multi-touch screen stays same way up regardless of where it points up to.
The earlier launched iPad came with Wi-Fi features. Since the iPad relies on a constant network connection for emails, browsing and other web-related applications, the newly launched iPad came equipped with a combination of Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities. Hence, the user stays connected via either mode.
Although iPad’s relevance seems to target home and personal users, it provides office applications for business users to use as though working on a conventional notebook. If you own other devices from iPad’s manufacturer, they can be easily synchronized with one another for email, contacts and calendaring functions.
Since iPad is newly launched, many features may still be lacking from its list of offerings. However, its designers are probably keeping a few things up their sleeves and will reveal them in due time.
