how do i make a short video/movie?

i have an aiptek camera and i want to make a short video of combined clip. i have windows movie maker but every time i try to import the videos into the software it says i haven’t downloaded the codec or something. also i have the videos in my video folder and they wont pop up when i click on it. i can view the videos from windows photo gallery and a version of quick time player which i haven’t bought the full thing of… is there anything i can do or any software i can download for free?

I have used a few video editing programs and the easiest one has been DVD Slideshow Builder. Very easy to use with professional features and same sort of layout as Movie Maker however a lot more powerful.
